Futbola İnegölspor’da başladı. 1994’te Gaziantepspor’a transfer oldu ve üç yıl forma giydiği bu kulüpte büyük çıkışını yaptı. 102 maçta forma giydi, 23 gol attı.

1998’de sansasyonel bir transfere imza atarak Beşiktaş’a geçti. Siyah beyazlı kulüpte üç yıl top koşturan Akman, 68 maçta 18 golle oynamasına karşın geçirdiği sakatlıklar nedeniyle giderek takımdan uzaklaştı.

Ve sonunda, Lucescu’yla birlikte yeniden yapılanan Galatasaray’a geldi. Lucescu’nun sisteminde defansif görevler de almaya başlayan Akman, bir sonraki sene ilk Türkiye Ligi şampiyonluğunu Galatasaray ile yaşadı. 2005 Fortis Türkiye Kupası, 2005-2006 Turkcell Süper Lig şampiyonluklarında kadromuzdaydı. Orta sahanın çeşitli bölgelerinde başarıyla görev yaparken 15 kez milli formayı giydi. Evli ve iki çocuk babası.
